      • Adverse childhood experience and other trauma

Trauma involves experiencing an extremelydifficult, potentially overwhelming or life-threatening event, or may be complex and developmental.

If you are struggling to cope with something that has happened to you, whether recently or many years ago, you may be experiencing the effects of trauma.
Trauma can result from a single event, or fromexperiences that happen repeatedly over a period of time. It can include childhood experiences, abuse, neglect, violence, accidents, illness, bereavement or difficult experiences within relationships. Sometimes the effects of an experience only become apparent much later, perhaps when circumstances in your life bring something from the past to the surface.
Traumatic experiences can affect us in manydifferent ways. You may feel anxious, low, angry or on edge, have difficulty sleeping, experience intrusive memories or thoughts, or find yourself avoiding situations that remind you of what happened. You may also feel numb or
disconnected, have difficulty trusting others, or find that your relationships are affected in ways that are difficult to understand.
Therapy can offer a safe and confidential spacein which to talk about what has happened and explore how it continues to affect
you. We can work at your pace, without pressure to talk about anything before you feel ready. Through developing a deeper understanding of your experiences, thoughts and feelings, it may become possible to feel less overwhelmed by the past and more able to live in the present.
My aim is to listen carefully to yourexperience and to help you make sense of what has happened in a way that feels meaningful to you.
